Springfield Forward is a community-driven master planning effort led by JHP Architecture / Urban Design to reimagine the future of the Springfield Apartments in Tallahassee–s historic Griffin Heights neighborhood. Initiated in early 2024 by the Tallahassee Housing Authority in partnership with Columbia Residential–and supported by the City of Tallahassee and Leon County–the effort reflects a shared commitment to strengthening neighborhoods through inclusive, thoughtful planning. Guided by the principles of listen, learn, and advise, the process elevates resident voices to shape an equitable, resilient framework that positions Springfield as a catalyst for connection, stability, and lasting community renewal.

Challenge
The Springfield Apartments faced aging housing conditions and weak physical and social connectivity within a historically significant neighborhood. Previous planning efforts lacked sustained engagement and a clear, resident-supported vision, creating the need for a redevelopment framework rooted in trust, transparency, and community priorities.
Solution
As lead planner, JHP guided Springfield Forward through an inclusive planning process centered on resident participation. Workshops, surveys, and hands-on design activities translated community input into clear redevelopment principles, land-use concepts, and context-sensitive design strategies, establishing a shared foundation to guide future investment.
Impact
Springfield Forward delivers a resident-informed roadmap that reinforces neighborhood identity, supports equitable reinvestment, and provides a durable framework for implementation. The plan positions Springfield as a stabilizing force within Griffin Heights and a model for community-led, long-term renewal.
