University Plaza at Mockingbird Station
Project Details:
University Plaza at Mockingbird Station was explored as a forward-looking design study centered on the DART transit plaza. Imagined as a walkable district of homes, shops, and gathering spaces woven around rail connectivity, the concept celebrated the energy of arrival and everyday movement. Framed by the rhythm of trains and the pulse of pedestrians, the vision proposed a vibrant urban crossroads—compact, connected, and community-focused. Though never executed, the study offered a clear glimpse of how transit could shape a lively, mixed-use neighborhood rooted in place and possibility.
Challenge
University Plaza at Mockingbird Station was explored as a planning study to imagine a mixed-use district anchored by a DART transit plaza. The challenge was to envision how a dense, urban environment—with housing, retail, and public gathering spaces—could reinforce the site’s role as a true transit-oriented development (TOD).
Solution
The study organized the concept around the existing transit hub, proposing a walkable framework that blended residential buildings, active ground-floor retail, and structured parking. A range of housing types was introduced, from lofts to mid-rise and high-rise living, complemented by rooftop gardens, terraces, and pools positioned above the parking structure.
Impact
Although the study did not progress to implementation, it illustrated how transit-connected retail, public space, and diverse housing could strengthen Mockingbird Station’s identity as a vibrant TOD.
